Saddharma - Hokkekyo

About Transliteration method:

The transliteration method used has been purposefully implemented with the following guidelines subjectively followed.

bullet

Kanji by kanji-character sentence structure.

bullet

Gender Non-Specific as much as possible.

bullet

Global and variant meanings elevated over specific, sectarian or even "traditional" translations. 

bullet

Stress on time conditioned meaning of the characters in the Kumarajiva literary period.

bullet

Where questionable, or wide variant renderings are possible, the consideration of individual radicals used in composition of the rendering are considered as the deciding factor.

For those dedicated to a deep understanding of the sutra as transmitted through Kumarajiva, Chi-e, St. Nichiren and the company of Sangha followers, it is important to understand that the Kanji and sutra cannons in the Mahayana tradition coming through China are NOT open to flat, one-dimensional translations. When these translations are done using a language such as English, an 8-fold loss of meaning and depth takes place.
   The Lotus Sutra in its original is a Masterpiece with depth and meaning unfathomable, precious, and profound. Those who have not studied and recited the Hokekyo in its original cannot grasp the majesty inherent in the unaltered.
It is only by knowing this fact (believing that it may be true) that the English literate can put properly into perspective the renderings that they have available to them.
   Chi-e addresses three main types of rendering of the original Hokekyo by Kumarajiva. But this also must be understood within and also outside of Kanjin-style renderings. In essence there are 3,000 renderings for each character in every phrase of the Sutra.
  In short this boils down to the Original Hokekyo holding a unique and time-stamped rendering for each and every individual devotee of the Hokekyo -- In essence, a living breathing unique message and set of guidance for each and every devotee, depending only on their ability and sraddha (faith-heart-nature).
  It is our hope that these random quotes from the I, II, XVI, and soon to include, XVII, XXI, XXII, will begin to awaken an extra spark of desire for devotion to the Blessing Field out of which arise ALL Buddhas -- Namu Myohorengekyo.
