My Religious Experience:
On July 10th, 1998, we were fortunate enough to welcome a new baby to our family. Christopher was born a healthy 8 lbs. 15 oz. It was not an easy pregnancy, however. Our daughter was 3 years old. I had miscarried the second pregnancy at 3 months. About half way through the third pregnancy, complications began to arise. There was some concern that the baby would not carry to term. As the pregnancy progressed, more problems arose. The baby dropped and contractions began. I was told to stay home and eventually put on bed-rest.
If a baby is born before the 36th to 38th week, there is a concern that the baby's lungs will not be fully developed. The baby could spend weeks in intensive care, perhaps on a ventilator. There is also the risk of long term complications.
Rev. Kanai had given me a special Obi to wear from the beginning of the fifth month of pregnancy. It was to assure a healthy baby and easy delivery. Since it was difficult to wear during the day, I wore it at night or slept with it under my pillow. I said Odaimoku and offered incense each day. I always wished that any merits I had accumulated would be transferred to my unborn child.
Christopher was born full term and without complication on the scheduled date! Everyone, including the doctor, was amazed.
We have many blessings. My belief in Sakyamuni Buddha and his teachings through Nichiren Shu have carried me through some rough times. Each day I acknowledge my thankfulness for a wonderful family and a good life. I hope that Buddha's teachings will permeate throughout this world and give peace to others.
